Vintage Scandinavian Rya Rug, Origin: Scandinavia, Circa: Mid-Twentieth Century – Here is an exciting and beautiful vintage carpet – a vintage Rya rug that was woven in Scandinavia during the middle years of the twentieth century. Highly abstract in its design and composition, this lovely example highlights the inventiveness so important to mid-century Scandinavian design. Rather than featuring the traditional dichotomy of borders and field that characterizes most fine rugs and carpets, this unique piece functions more as a canvas, onto which a colorful melange has been painted. Streaks of light blue lighten up an otherwise dark background which, while appearing black from a distance, is actually made up of a series of dark blue and dark red fibers. Meanwhile, the lower left corner of this vintage Scandinavian rug boasts an especially bright confluence of yellows and oranges. Toward the center, this confluence is broken up into a series of small circular shapes, which float elegantly across the surface. Set against the dark background, they are suggestive of stars, or perhaps flowers in the night.
