Style: Kazak Rugs

Protection symbols and stacked ram’s horn medallions surrounding coffered squares decorate the bold sapphire blue field of this antique Kazak rug from the Caucasus.

Antique Kazak Rug, Origin: Caucasus, Circa: 1900 – Checkered protection symbols, colorful details and vibrant ram’s horn or quch guruq medallions with contrasting outlines decorate the narrow sapphire blue field that serves as the focal point for the composition. Golden-yellow running water borders embellish the edges of the field along with barber pole stripes that separate the field and guard bands. Broad primary borders feature reciprocating latch hooks and divided color blocks that incorporate clear white, cool jadeite green and bold vermilion red details along with S-hooks and other auspicious symbols and decorations. In the traditional Kazak rug and Caucasian rug style, crenellated fence outer borders create a protective barrier for the field. However, they are rendered in a novel selection of complementary colors, including jade green, mustard yellow, vermillion and sapphire blue, which are also prominently featured within the field.
