Antique Kazak, Caucasus, Late 19th Century – This classic Kazak rug from the Caucasus features multiple sets of complex borders and a series of six stacked Memling guls, a motif introduced to many by the works of the 15th century Flemish master Hans Memling. Each Memling gul features a stepped lozenge decorated with spiraling latch hooks set inside an octagonal medallion. Burdock motifs, birds, angular human figures and S-hooks dot the striking blue ground. Broad inner borders featuring colorful roundels frame the vibrant field along with crenellated fence outer borders and main borders featuring a colorful counter change pattern decorated with S-hooks and small-scale protection symbols. This colorful 19th century rug features a rich variety of symbolic motifs, a vibrant color palette and a border-centric composition.
