Antique Kashan Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Turn of the 20th Century – Epitomizing the technical skill and artistic finesse of the Mohtashem atelier, this antique vase carpet immortalizes an iconic pattern in the lavish, colorful style of Kashan. Inscribed cartouches and artful pillars with upright embellishments gracefully frame the grand vase that takes center stage. Sweeping branches with arborescent features arch toward the edges of the field and are brought together in a topiary form by an ornate Shah Abbasi palmette. These artful espaliered branches are accompanied by delicate millefleur ground scrolls that display intricate details and provide shelter for the expressive songbirds that perch on the branches. The levity of the fiery vermillion reds and bright sunlit colors of the field are countered in the dark, heavy main borders, which display a sophisticated pattern of reciprocating palmettes, serrated Herati leaves and lavish small-scale florets.
