Antique Persian Ghasgai Rug, Origin: Persia, Circa: First Quarter of the Twentieth Century – Here is an intriguing antique Oriental rug – an antique Ghashgai carpet that was woven in Persia during the early decades of the twentieth century. Delightfully tribal and compelling throughout, this bright Ghashagai carpet features the geometric experimentation and abstract aesthetic that characterize the finest examples. From its borders through to the stacked medallion style decoration at its center, this antique Persian carpet is a truly marvelous and fascinating work. A narrow band of blue runs along the perimeter of the piece, broken up by a procession of geometric figures, woven in black and edged with a soft brown. Within the borders, a bright red shade dominates: save for specific areas where large decorations appear, the field is given to this red shade and this red shade alone. This bright color invigorates the carpet, and contrasts powerfully with the bright white coloration of the two large diamond shapes that form most of the central decoration. A diamond of black separates the two white diamonds, which are flanked on the top and the bottom by clever geometric figures. A beautiful and exciting work, this antique Ghasgai carpet is a truly compelling example.
