European Antique Rugs and Carpets

European rugs and carpets began there production in France with the royal manufacturers wove Savonnerie carpets for Louis XIV to Louis XVI. The king, rarely able to sell his rugs, led to the emergence of the Aubusson rug. The influence of these two styles flourished throughout Europe leading to the expansion of the rug weaving industry. Needlepoint embroidery was another European style that was adapted from Persian carpets. These rugs focus on the Arts and crafts Movement from the nineteenth century onward. These techniques were applied in various parts of Europe.
