Captivating And Beautiful Green Floral Design Antique Bessarabian Flat Weave Kilim Area Rug, Origin: Romania, The Age Of This Rug: Mid 19th Century – This irresistible rose garden Romanian Bessarabian kilim was created in the 1920s. Bessarabia is in Eastern Europe in an area that is modern-day Moldavia in the Carpathian Mountains. The Bessarabian class of carpets refers to kilims and pile rugs that were created in the Russian provinces during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This beautiful example has an Old World flavor and a delicate character that would complement both formal and Boho chic styles.

Unlike Persian carpets that can be classified by region by their weave and knotting technique, this is not the case with Bessarabian carpets. This one is from Romania, but the technique is one that is found throughout the area. The term Bessarabian encompasses a vast region of carpets. Florals are one of the more common motifs from the area, and this is an excellent stylistic example.

The floral design of this carpet has ties to the nearby Anatolian carpets in its use of color, but the design is quite unlike the tribal creations of other nearby areas. Some contain folk-motifs and traditional tribal designs, but many of them more closely resemble designs that are inspired by 18th-century French carpets. French carpets were often seen at the Russian court and in aristocratic circles. These mountain people were exposed to these European florals and adopted the designs as their own.

This carpet uses an allover pattern that is created by pattern repeats. Although there appears to be vertical symmetry, it is lost in the complexity of the design. The borders of the carpet are in diluted tones with formal motifs in the corner that are similar to the architectural details on European buildings.

This antique carpet has a delicate design and evokes the imagination. You can almost smell the scent from the beautiful roses. As these carpets were fashioned after styles that were popular in the French and Russian courts, it would make the perfect addition to an ornate, traditional European design style. It adds a delicate character and elegance to any room.
