A former territory of the Ottoman Empire, the Balkans is representative of empire’s diverse makeup. Balkan rugs often depict Islamic motifs as well as nomadic tribal designs. Although the reach of the Ottoman Empire was extensive, the Balkan rug industry reached its height during the nineteenth century.
