Antique Tabriz Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century - This stunning antique Tabriz has a medallion design inspired by the court carpets of seventeenth-century Persia. At the center a golden ivory medallion with a scalloped arabesque contour sits amidst a soft terracotta field brimming with delicate flowering vines and palmettes. Hanging vases or lamps function as finials for the medallion while deep navy cornerpieces filled with vines define the oblong shape of the field. A lush, minutely detailed vinescroll makes up the border, set against a blue ground like the cornerpieces, with thin ivory, terracotta, and blue guard stripes to add contrast. Rarely do antique Tabrizes come so close to the classical Persian forerunners.
