Antique Chinese Rugs -- Antique Ningsia, China, late nineteenth century - This superb antique Ningsia is an outstanding example of reserved classic Chinese design and color. A large see-through medallion occupies the center of the field with smaller ones in the four corners. The intervening area contains sprays of flowering trees and bamboo, all on a lovely, spacious sand ground. The effect of the blue-green and terracotta detailing against the sand ground is especially soothing. The border in a slightly darker tan with floating flowers, leaves, and fretwork rosettes provides the perfect framework for the field design, closing it in while sharing its light openness.
