 Banished by an enraged Hera, Leto was forced to keep her children Apollo and Artemis on the island Delos. With water in the foreground and background and a swan placed prominently near the Muses, this tapestry is an unmistakable interpretation of the island of Delos. Filled with symbolic figures and hidden details, this Baroque tapestry woven in England reflects the lush florid style popular in France as well as the pastoral scenes used Renaissance painters, such as Julius Romanus and Nicolas Poussin.
