Hamadan Rug, Persia, Circa 1900 - This elegant antique Malayer is remarkable in its use of the same basic pattern to comprise all the elements of the field. The medallion, cornerpieces and the ground are all built up on the Herati design; only the orientation and coloration of the elements vary, but this is sufficient to make the different areas appear to contrast. Conversely, the borders do utilize different motifs, but their color and graphic detail make them relate closely to the medallion and cornerpieces. Through this subtle manipulation of form and tonality, the carpet achieves a unified but varied and dynamic effect.
