Aubusson Carpet, France, Late 19th Century - A grand, flower-filled cartouche medallion of roccoco scrolls hovers amidst a rich lavender field on this unusually lavish antique Aubusson. A closer look reveals that the field has an internal lavender tone on tone-design of scrolls that receded subtly before the viewer's eye. An ivory ground border of leafy scrolls, flower garlands, and cartouches frames the field, enclosed yet again by a golden-mauve outer zone with a simple striped edges. The palette of this Aubusson is extraordinarily rich and precocious.
