Antique Bakhtiari, Persia, circa 1900
Rectangular medallions and highly stylized palmettes repeat in staggered array across the field of this stridently abstract antique Bakhtiari from Persia. While much of the detail is floral, the treatment of the forms is so geometric in its sensibility that the floral aspect barely shows through. The design is bold in its scale, but the fine linear detail applied throughout minimizes the graphic impact of the patterning. Instead we tend to notice the exceptionally beautiful palette of soft golden, pale blue, and sage green tones. The floral aspect of the design shows up a bit more in the border of rosettes and palmettes arranged in series.
