Antique Agra Rug, Origin: India, Circa: Late 19th Century – Antique Agra carpets like this, produced in India in the late nineteenth century, are admired for their suave adaptation of classical Mughal and Persian rug designs, but rarely do they capture the quality of these models with such elegant perfection. At the center of the field a delicately scalloped star medallion in pale apricot emits graceful, curling arabesque vines, surrounded by a welter of palmettes and fine, flowering tendrils, all against a soft, sage green ground. Corner-pieces like the medallion complete the field, while an elegant apricot-ground border of palmettes and sickle leaves provides the perfect frame for the central design. The counterpoint of color and pattern here is extraordinary, even among the very best Agras.
