Antique Karabagh Long Rug, Caucasus, circa 1900 - This delicately lush antique Karabagh has a design inspired by French Savonnerie and Aubusson carpets. Across the field flowering branches form approximately circular openwork medallions with birds perched at the centers. These are all set in staggered array in pale sand, mauve, and celadon green tones against a dramatic black field. The barely discernible vinescroll border echoes the tone-on-tone coloration for the field motifs to give the impression of a neutral, open frame. This carpet is a masterpiece of naturalism and reserved classic elegance.
