Amritsar, India, Circa 1900 - This magnificent antique Amritsar fromIndia is modeled closely on the one of the greatest carpets ever made- the famous Ardebil carpet of the early sixteenth century from North Persia. A scalloped circular medallion with pendant ogives radiates outward like a grand rose window on a medieval church. Within an around the medallions the entire field sprawls with delicate floral and arabesque detail. A magnificent cartouche border frames the entire composition with consummate classical grace.
