Antique Khorassan Persian Rug, Eastern Persia, circa 1900An allover oriental design of large and small cartouches staggered in alternating rows repeats symmetrically across the field of this lavish yet elegant antique Khorassan. Smaller viney details fill the areas between the cartouches. A narrow, understated vinescroll border frames the field. The effect of the cartouche design, however, is subtle since it is articulated primarily through the outlines in dark and light blue and cocoa, while the rest of the carpet is rendered in shades of golden tan. In this way the piece achieves a high level of complexity within in a subtle, decorative context.
