Antique Caucasian Chi-Chi Rug, Caucasus, Late 19th Century – This archetypal Caucasian Chi-Chi rug features a superb latticework pattern with decorative fetter motifs outlined with interlocking borders. Branching floral sprays and auspicious star motifs decorate each pendant-bound lozenge creating a phenomenal latticework pattern comprised of many individual motifs. Each Prussian blue fetter symbol features creamy white outlines that contrast the warm reddish brown field. Wide borders, decorative guard bands and secondary borders create a well-balanced and uniquely Caucasian frame for the decorative field. The somber walnut-brown main borders feature elegant rosettes separated by a series of decorative slanting bars that form one of the most iconic Chi-Chi border patterns. Narrow secondary borders decorated with a series of stepped lozenges set in geometric tiles continue the stately selection of traditional colors used within the field and borders of this antique Caucasian Chi-Chi rug completed circa 1880.
