Karabagh Rug, Caucasus, Late 19th Century - A strikingly graphic design of diamond medallions with finials repeats down the length of this extraordinary Karabagh runner. The palette of the carpet is vibrant, with medallions rendered largely in black and yellow boldly set against the brilliant red field. A cooler grayish tan border frames the field, although it vinescroll design maintains the strident geometric drawing of the field. The openness of the design balances the use of rich color, and indeed, it allows the color to take pride of place in the overall composition.
