Large Oversized Vintage Mid Century Chinese Hooked Rug, Country of Origin: China, Circa Date: Mid 20th Century – While antique hooked rugs and carpets are famed for their homey charm as a folk art genre, this extraordinary example competes with the sophisticated elegance of French Aubusson and Savonnerie carpets. A cameo medallion on soft tan surrounded by Neo-classical acanthus vine-scrolls is enclosed yet again by a subtle diamond lattice on slightly darker tan. An acanthus vine-scroll border with scalloped corners on a pale cocoa ground frames the field as if it were a painting. Much of the decorative beauty of this carpet resides in the lustrous velvety quality of the wool and in the sparing effect of pastel reds and greens amidst the varied shades of tan.
