Chinese Rug, China, Early 20th Century - This antique Peking is the at once traditional and yet so modern in its elegant simplicity. A plain monochrome border surrounds a mauve field with an allover pattern of s-shaped tiger stripes. The stripes, however, are all subtle in tone, most barely perceptible against the background. As a result, the rug largely functions as a modernist open field composition. Only a closer look reveals the complex allover patterning. As a decorative carpet it offers the best of all possible worlds.
