Antique Sultanabad Rug, Persia, circa 1900 - Although Sultanabad weavers are famed for their room size rugs, they did sometimes produce runners, like this unusual example. Above and below a central medallion are stylized vases with floral networks hovering nearby. These latter features are derived form classical Persian Kerman vase carpets. But the central medallion and the array of abstract human and animal figures that fill up the rest of the deep blue field are world apart from such classical sources. They seem to relate much more to the traditions of village or tribal weaving, like the border of highly stylized rosettes and leaves. Indeed, the entire composition is imbued with this rustic vitality, unusual among Sultanabads.
