Antique Caucasian Kazak Rug, Origin: Caucasus, Circa: Turn of the 20th Century – Here is an exemplary antique Oriental rug – an antique Kazak carpet that was woven in the Caucasus around the turn of the twentieth century. Generally speaking, antique Caucasian rugs and carpets – especially antique Kazak rugs – are celebrated for their rich tribal aesthetic, which has its roots in the millennia-old culture of the region. This highly geometric composition exemplifies some of the more important trends in Kazak weaving. For instance, the vibrant reds, rich greens and ivories that color this carpet are all important to the Caucasian weaving tradition. Further, the format of the rug is in line with the finest Kazaks: here, the composition effectively exists as a series of stacked rectangular bodies, with a square sitting in a rectangle that sits in a larger rectangle. At the center of the entire thing is an octagonal medallion that is replete with traditionally Caucasian design elements. Indeed, important motifs appear throughout the carpet, from the vegetal elements of the red outer border, to the geometric patterns of the inner green field. A beautiful composition, this antique carpet is a striking example.
